The Logline

In the shadowed halls of Ezer Hospital, where compassion meets horror, stories unfold that challenge the very fabric of humanity.

The Show

An anthology series set in the Ezer Hospital for the Insane, one of the first facilities designed to treat mental illness as a condition worthy of compassion and treatment, rather than a moral or spiritual failing.

Background & Setting

Set in 1950’s New England, Ezer Hospital, founded in 1870, treated the mentally ill with “moral treatment,” providing decent living conditions. It also housed society’s outcasts—homeless, prostitutes, criminals, and the dangerously insane—creating a volatile mix of hope, despair, and unimaginable horrors within its walls.

Story Synopsis

Spanning decades and genres, the series will share the stories of Ezer Hospital’s doctors, staff, patients, and their families – often heartbreaking and sometimes terrifying.

It will also tackle the larger theme of how society views mental health – from an era when patients were “sent away” to dungeon-like facilities and subjected to isolation, cold water baths, and regular beatings…Followed by a radical “scientific” approach that relied on drugs, electroshock, and forced lobotomies…And finally, into the modern age of medical and psychological intervention.

At its deepest level, Numbers of the Damned will explore universal themes regarding the human condition – love and loss, genius and insanity, tragedy and hope - within the setting of a mental institution.
